Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of DuVernay's daughter occurred on the 24th of August, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay discovered her love for art from her aunt Denise. DuVernay worked as a night nurse to allow her aunt to have the time she needed during the day for the love of literature, art as well as theatre. DuVernay fell in love with the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt showed the film to DuVernay. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that art can be used to engage people. DuVernay grew up with her mother who was socially conscious and showed her how to use the arts as a way to express herself. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and raised. Her father recalled watching the historic civil right's march along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was strongly influenced by the summers she spent in Selma and decided to make a documentary about King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled in the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English and African American study. As studying, DuVernay began to consider producing for broadcast journalism. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was appointed to monitor and investigate the residence of an individual juror. The duties she was required to perform left her dissatisfied and, following her decision not to pursue a career in the field of journalism, she was able to move to the field of public relations. DuVernay joined a small studio as a Junior Publicist shortly after graduating from college. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations. Apart from PR, the agency also created a variety of social media and lifestyle networks, including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful. Her fame is due to her roles as Anna Payne in American Experience, (1987) A More Perfect Union and A More Perfect Union (2009).
